Introduction

Red deer, goats and pigs can be found throughout the area at any time of the year. The elevated terraces provide good spring hunting once new grass growth commences.

A permit is required to hunt on public conservation land.

This hunting area is covered by an 'open area permit' – get it online or from a DOC office.

About this hunting block

This area covers the north side of the Buller River from New Creek to Newton River. The area has a number of moderate sized streams the largest being Lyell Creek. There are several large elevated terraces with areas of open pakahi. The high beech forested ridges reach about 1000 m. 

Access

Access to this area is directly off the Buller Gorge road. There is a walking track up Lyell Creek to Irishmans Creek beyond there track is not well maintained and can be difficult to follow.

There are several 4WD tracks that provide access onto the elevated terraces. These are transmission service tracks.

Landholders

There is no private land within this area.

Dogs

Dogs are prohibited in all areas except where authorisation has been granted by DOC. People wishing to take a dog into this area should seek authorisation from the local DOC office.

Huts

There are no huts in this area. There is a camping area at Lyell.

Possums are controlled by TBfree in areas near the Buller River.

Additional information

Hunters are advised to check for current pesticide operations that may be in progress where they intend to hunt. Summaries are published every four months.

The use of shotguns, shotgun-rifle combos, .22 calibre and rim-fire firearms is prohibited on public conservation land unless stated otherwise.
