Buller hunting

Located in the West Coast region

The Buller Kawatiri Area manages about 300,000ha of public conservation land in the northern West Coast. Hunting for red deer, goats, feral pigs is popular throughout much of the area.

The area includes Paparoa National Park and part of Kahurangi National Park. The area is extensively forested with a few large river valleys and low alpine areas. Some valleys have maintained walking track access and backcountry huts but many of the more remote places do not have tracks, footbridges or huts.

Most species have a preferred hunting season. Chamois are uncommon.

This area, centred around Westport, can be accessed from SH6.

Climate

The climate is wet at times with over 3000mm of rain each year with westerly winds predominating. In winter several falls of snow can be expected that blanket the tops and upper forests. Spring to autumn is mild with regular spells of fine weather.
