Tangarakau Scenic Reserve hunting

The Tangarakau Scenic Reserve is a large tract of steep country on the eastern side of the Tangarakau Gorge. Possums, goats and pigs are hunted here.

Goats, possums and pigs are present in this reserve. This area receives annual goat control by DOC staff.

General information

This large tract of steep country lies to the eastern side of the Tangarakau Gorge along the Forgotten World Highway (SH43). The 2642 ha reserve has a variety of forest types – from rimu and tawa to hard beech, rewarewa and kowhai to pasturelands. The rugged broken country has many bluffs and is subject to slips.

The rare tree daisy Brachyglottis turneri. North Island robin, New Zealand falcon, New Zealand pigeon, pukeko, whitehead and bats are all in the reserve. 

Access

Adjacent to SH43, that winds 16 km through the reserve.

Landholders

Permission to access Tangarakau Conservation Area via private land must be gained by arrangements with adjoining landholders.

Huts

There are no DOC huts in this reserve.

Dogs

Dogs are prohibited except where authorisation has been granted by DOC. People wishing to take a dog into this area need to get a permit from the local DOC office and have a current kiwi aversion certificate.

Avian awareness and avoidance training

To take dogs across private property, or tracks crossing farmland, you must get permission from the landowner.
