General information

The steep hill country of the 3,512 ha Moki Conservation Area forms the headwaters of the Waitara River which acts as a natural boundary between Moki and the adjoining Makino Conservation Area. To the east of Mangapapa Road the reserve becomes easier rolling hill country.

A mix of logged and unlogged forest, the Moki canopy is primarily tawa, kamahi and maire with large emergent rimu and rata. Areas of abandoned lease land and part of the main valley are covered in mänuka scrub.

North Island brown kiwi are present. Kaka, North Island robin/toutouwai, whitehead/popokatea, moreporks/ruru and bats/pekapeka may also be heard or seen.

The track is also popular with trampers and mountain bikers. A basic caravan park and picnic area can be found near the track entrance on Mangapapa Road.

This reserve receives annual goat control by DOC staff.

Access

The Rerekapa Track offers good access from either Kiwi Road or Mangapapa Road.

Landholders

The Rerekapa Track is a public track that crosses farmland at either end of the conservation area. Hunters are advised to be respectful of farming operations and contact landowners first. Access may be restricted at the owners discretion during lambing between 1 August and 31 October.
