Longwood Forest Conservation Area, Round Hill - Falls Creek Scenic Reserve hunting

You can hunt red deer and pigs in the Longwood Forest.

About this hunting block

Located 45 vkm west of Invercargill, the Longwoods are a popular hunting area of approximately 23,008 ha. The Longwoods consists of extensive areas of rolling terrain. Vegetation is a mix of beech and podocarp forest with large open tops of tussock grasslands and wetlands. Threatened species include mistletoes, yellow-crowned parakeet and wood pigeon. 

Round Hill Conservation Area is a hunting area east of Orepuki,and covers approximately 120 ha on the western side of the Longwood Forest. The terrain is relatively steep and covered with regenerating kamahi-mixed podocarp forest with farmland on three sides and a private scenic reserve on the eastern boundary. 

Access

Access to the western side of the range is gained from SH99 and access to the eastern side is gained from side roads off the Riverton/Otautau Road. Permission to cross private land must be obtained from the landowners. 

Round Hill is accessed from Falls Creeks Road off the Orepuki Riverton SH99.

Animals present

Red deer - moderate numbers
Pigs - low numbers

Dogs

  • Dogs must be registered and are not permitted in huts.
  • When crossing private land, dogs are to be on a leash until well into forest and kept under control.
  • DOC must be notified regarding missing or lost dogs on conservation land.

Turnbull’s (Big Dam) Hut – 4 bunks

If possuming, a permit must be obtained by visiting the DOC Murihiku Office in Invercargill.
