Introduction

Animals present are red deer, and possibly also goats and pigs in the Remarkables South hunting block, which runs from the upper Nevis Valley floor to the crest of the Hector Mountains.

Permit requirements

A permit is required to hunt on public conservation land.

This hunting area is covered by an 'open area permit' – get it online or from a DOC office.

Seasonal restrictions

Nevis Valley Road closed Tuesday after Queens Birthday to 30 September.

Before lighting a fire on public conservation land, check it's alright to light. Extinguish all fires before leaving huts and campsites. How to minimise the risk of fire.

Dog access

Dogs allowed. Keep dog under control at all times.

General information

This 3900 ha block is part of the Remarkables Conservation Area and runs from the upper Nevis Valley floor to the crest of the Hector Mountains. The vegetation is mostly unmodified tussock grassland.

Access

The hunting block adjoins the Nevis Valley Road which is accessed either from Garston in Southland or Bannockburn in Central Otago. This road is closed from the Tuesday after Queens Birthday until 30 September.

Dogs

Dogs are allowed in this block with a hunting permit. If accessing the block over private land, you must have landholder permission to take your dog.
