Introduction

Red deer are present in the Mt Benger hunting block on the ridge top of Mt Benger overlooking the Roxburgh/Ettrick valley.

Permit requirements

A permit is required to hunt on public conservation land.

This hunting area is covered by an 'open area permit' – get it online or from a DOC office.

Seasonal restrictions

Before lighting a fire on public conservation land, check it's alright to light. Extinguish all fires before leaving huts and campsites. How to minimise the risk of fire.

Dog access

Dogs allowed. Keep dog under control at all times.

About this hunting block

Red deer are present, but populations are highly mobile and tend to move on when disturbed.

General information

This 829 ha block lies on the ridge top of Mt Benger overlooking the Roxburgh/Ettrick valley. The area is mostly high tussock grassland plateau which can be very exposed in adverse conditions and fog can disorientate the unprepared.

Access

From SH 8 north of Ettrick, turn onto Dalmuir Road then Mt Benger Road which will take you to the hunting block boundary. Note this is a steep slippery track and 4WD is recommended.

Dogs

Dogs are allowed in this block with a hunting permit. If accessing the block over private land, you must have landholder permission to take your dog.
