Introduction

Low numbers of goats, pigs and fallow deer are found in Tokomaru East Block Conservation Area. Now restricted to foot traffic, the old Tokomaru East Road passes through the centre of the block.

Permit requirements

A permit is required to hunt on public conservation land.

This hunting area is covered by a 'restricted area permit'. Contact the DOC office managing the hunting area.

Dog access

Dogs with a DOC permit (contact the relevant DOC office) and a current kiwi aversion certificate only.

About this hunting block

Goats, pigs and fallow deer are present in low numbers. The block is best suited to pig hunting with dogs. Deer hunting is best in the northern area of the block.

Special restrictions:

  • Closed 1 August until 31 October for lambing
  • Permit for two consecutive days only
  • One firearm per hunting party
  • Must be displayed on vehicle dashboard.
  • Do not venture onto neighbouring private property.

General information

Permits are not available online. Contact the local DOC office for a permit.

The block is predominately regenerating forest. The boundaries are not defined and there is adjoining private bush land, particularly to the east. Adjoining landowners do not allow hunting on their land.

Access

Turn off State Highway 3 5 km north-east of Whanganui onto Blueskin Road. This road follows onto Brunswick Road, turn right onto Tokomaru East Road. Pass along the ridge top through a cutting on a rise and on the right is the gate with a Tokomaru East Block sign. From the gate follow the marked track to the boundary sign. The track passes through private property to the boundary for approximately 30 minutes walk. No hunting until the block is reached.

Dogs

A separate permit is required to hunt with dogs. All dogs must be avian avoidance certified. Contact the local DOC office for details.

Huts

There are no DOC huts in this reserve.

Additional information

The old Tokomaru East Road passes through the centre of the block. No official track work is carried out so the track is very over grown and is restricted to foot traffic.
