Introduction

Pigs and goats are found in Patukino Scenic Reserve and Lakes Road Conservation Area. Kiwi are known to present in both areas that feature podocarp/tawa forest.

Permit requirements

A permit is required to hunt on public conservation land.

This hunting area is covered by an 'open area permit' – get it online or from a DOC office.

Dog access

Dogs with a DOC permit (contact the relevant DOC office) and a current kiwi aversion certificate only.

Fallow deer, pigs and goats are all present within these reserves.

General Information

Permits are available online as 'Whanganui Reserves' under the Central North Island hunting block.

Podocarp/tawa forest with moderate to steep topography. Kiwi are known to be present.

Access

Access is through private land from all directions described below. You must have landowners’ permission to enter their property.

Turn off State Highway 3 at Waitotara onto Ngutuwera Road then right onto Mangawhio Road then left onto Omata or Lakes Road. The block can be accessed by walking from both of these road ends. It is also possible to walk in from the Waitotara Valley Road at Tawhiwhi.

Dogs

A separate permit is required to hunt with dogs. All dogs must be avian avoidance certified. Contact the local DOC office for details.
