About this hunting block

General information

This area consists of beech forest remnants and open tussock country, with red and fallow deer, tahr and chamois all present. This area is part of the Ahuriri Conservation Park and Ruataniwha Conservation Park.

Access

Access is via Quailburn Road, 4.5 km north of Omarama. At the end of Quailburn road is the Quailburn historic site and car park.

Alternative access is via either Freehold or Parsons Creek off Lake Ohau Road. This area can also be accessed by a 4WD vehicle easement (off Birchwood Road) through Ben Avon private land to the Ahuriri River. This gives walking access to the Quailburn block. No vehicles are allowed across the river.

Dogs

Dogs are allowed in this block but must be under control. Dogs should be kept on a lead at all times in riverbed areas and wetlands between the months of August to end of February, because of nesting birdlife.
