About this hut

Pararaki Hut was built in 1964 by the New Zealand Forest Service for pest animal control work in the area and is a standard S70 / 6 bunk design. It was used extensively by Landcare Research every winter for about 25 years to carry out their long running possum research programme.

Approximate times from nearest road end and huts
  • Cape Palliser Road via Pararaki Stream: 3-4 hr (12 km). Permission required from Mr W. Jephson on + 64  6 307 8210
  • Washpool Hut via Aorangi Crossing: 2 hr 30 min - 3 hr 30 min (4.7 km)
  • Kawakawa Hut via Aorangi Crossing: 2-3 hr (4.5 km)

Fees

  • Adult (18+ years): $5 per night
  • Youth (11 – 17 years): $2.50 per night
