Introduction

Lake Te Anau is a great place for activities including walking, hunting, mountain biking, and water activities. Te Anau is the closest town with facilities to Fiordland National Park, famed for tramping and spectacular scenery.

Highlights

Families with children can explore the township. Visit the Punanga Manu o Te Anau/Te Anau Bird Sanctuary for a glimpse of the rare, flightless takahē and other birds.

If you have more time and the right skills and gear - there’s plenty of adventure further up the lake. It is the closest town to world-famous Milford Sound (2 hours drive), and the start of the Kepler, Routeburn and Milford Track Great Walks.

Enjoy the spectacular backdrop of Mt Luxmore and the Murchison mountains from town or the lakeside tracks, or from the water on your boat or kayak.
