Montgomery Peak Track

Introduction
This easy tramping track goes up to Montgomery Peak in Montgomery Scenic Reserve. It has stunning views of the peninsula and Akaroa Harbour.Dog access
This track carries on from Giant Tōtara Walk.
It winds up steadily through forest and then north through open grasslands and regenerating bush.
The track then turns and climbs steeply up a gap in the bluffs and over boulders. It reaches open tussock tops before eventually climbing onto Montgomery Peak, with stunning views down into the peninsula and Akaroa Harbour.
Drive to Hilltop on the Akaroa Highway then turn along the Summit Road for 200 m to a small area at the side of the road where you can park and start the Giant Tōtara Walk.
Take care near stinging nettle
Urtica ferox (ongaonga) is an endemic stinging nettle and common in this area. Take care not to touch these plants as they have a very strong sting. Ongaonga are an important host plant of Vanessa gonerilla (kahukura), the endemic red admiral butterfly.
