Rock avalanche risks
Rock avalanches have occurred near Plateau Hut. Recent avalanches have been too small to reach Plateau Hut, but very rare large avalanches, such as might occur during an earthquake, could hit the hut.
The risk to someone staying the night at Plateau Hut is much lower than the risks from climbing Aoraki/Mt Cook. It is a similar level of risk to taking a helicopter flight to the hut. You may want to choose another hut if you are not comfortable with that level of risk.
Scientists and DOC are working together to learn more about rock avalanches in these mountains. Read a 2021 assessment of rock avalanche risk at Plateau Hut (PDF, 3,445K).
