Tiritiri Matangi Island is a sanctuary offering a pest-free environment for rare and endangered wildlife.
The bunkhouse is the only accommodation on Tiritiri Matangi.
It is a communal facility and has limited availability as it is primarily used by volunteers and students carrying out work on the island.
Shared occupancy:
Adult: $30 per person
Child (0-17 years inclusive): $20 per person
Note, there is an extra room not available to the public to book. It is used for management and research purposes. When making a booking for the entire bunkhouse, you may still be sharing with others.
Bookings are open for stays from 1 July 2020 to 30 June 2021.
Bookings are required all year.
No public ferries travel on Monday or Tuesday except public holidays.
A $10 service fee applies to all phone, email and in-person bookings.
Your hut booking is for any bunk bed, not for a specific bunk bed – select your bunk bed on arrival.
The bunkhouse is located at the top of the hill near the lighthouse and Visitor Centre.
There is no public transport on the island but, if you are staying overnight, your gear will be taken to the bunkhouse. When you get off the ferry, leave your gear in the trolley on the wharf and the island ranger will take it to the bunkhouse.
From the wharf, take either Wharf Road or Wattle Track to the bunkhouse (40 min).
Check ferry information for Tiritiri Matangi Island before you book.
The public passenger ferry doesn't usually run on Mondays and Tuesdays. Also the island rangers are not available to give you the bunkhouse briefing or check-out on these days.
The exception is if it is a public holiday. The ferry and rangers are available on public holidays, but not on Christmas Day.
All visitors staying on the island must complete and bring the biosecurity checklist.
Both the bunkhouse and ferry can get booked out in advance. Check both are available before finalising bookings.
Ferry sailings are subject to weather conditions. Call +64 9 916 2241 after 7 am on the morning of your departure to check if your ferry is sailing.
Bring an extra day's food in case you have to stay longer. You will not be charged for additional unplanned time spent in the bunkhouse waiting for the weather to settle. However, if you wish to leave by means other than the ferry, DOC is not liable for the cost.
On your departure day, if the weather is deteriorating, the ferry operator may cancel the day trip but do a single morning run for overnight visitors.
