High protection areas and seafloor protection areas in the Hauraki Gulf/Tīkapa Moana
New protection areas are restoring the Hauraki Gulf/Tīkapa Moana's precious ecosystem.

New protection areas include:

  • High protection areas which have a high level of protection for marine life. No recreational or commercial fishing but certain customary practices are allowed.
  • Seafloor protection areas which protect the seafloor. Low impact fishing such as, line fishing, spear fishing, diving, harvesting by hand, is allowed. Bottom trawling, dredging, and Danish seining not allowed.
