Introduction

DOC is planning predator control over about 500,000 hectares of public conservation land in its Tiakina Ngā Manu programme from July 2021 to June 2022 to protect taonga wildlife.

Highlights

This programme is funded from the Government’s Budget 2018 investment in predator control of $81.2 million over four years. This provides for sustained predator control over an increased area of public conservation land. It also allows DOC to deal with resulting predator plagues when forests produce heavy seeding (masts) such as in 2019. A beech mast is predicted for parts of New Zealand in 2022.

Priority sites in this year’s programme have been recommended for a control operation. The map below shows their locations:

The aerial 1080 operations we have recommended will only go ahead subject to consultation. We will continue to monitor rats and stoats and also only proceed if they reach levels that threaten wildlife.

Recommended ground operations that use trapping and bait stations will start from July.

Detailed maps of sites are available on the pesticide summaries interactive map. This contains information about all DOC pesticide operations, ground and aerial.
