Conservation volunteers release takahē into the tussock with excitement on their face.

Volunteer for DOC or one of our partner sanctuary sites across New Zealand.

I support takahē.

Every year the programme hosts a group of volunteers at the Burwood Takahē Centre to experience a week in the life of a takahē ranger.

The work varies throughout the year, but it may include:

  • feeding takahē
  • inspecting and maintaining pen fences
  • regular checking and maintenance of predator traps set in and outside the fence lines
  • general maintenance of facilities and equipment.

Volunteer at sanctuaries

Sanctuary sites often have opportunities for you to volunteer. This is a great way to support species recovery.

Explore Visit a takahe to learn about sanctuary sites you can visit or apply for their volunteer programmes.
