Ngāti Hikairo ki Tongariro of Ngāti Tūwharetoa and DOC want to make sure the experience of walking the Tongariro Alpine Crossing:
- is sustainable and safe
- respects the cultural significance of the area; and
- protects the fragile environment.
High visitor numbers put consistent pressure on the conservation and cultural values of the area, as well as infrastructure.
These pressures include congestion, waste management, environmental damage and lack of respect for the cultural significance of Tongariro.
By better managing these challenges, we better protect Tongariro for future generations.
Between 2023 and 20206, DOC implemented a range of changes to improve the managing and experience of the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. These changes are now embedded, and continued adaptive management will aim to manage visitor pressures while strengthening cultural and heritage values in the area.
Tongariro Alpine Crossing booking system
DOC introduced a free booking system in October 2023. We recommend visitors using any part of the track book in advance.
Book to use any part of the Tongariro Alpine Crossing
DOC can communicate with visitors to Tongariro directly using information from the booking system. This means important information can be provided quickly.
Visitors who turn up to the Tongariro Alpine Crossing without a booking will not be penalised and there is no cap on the number of bookings.
Visitors who have a Tongariro Northern Circuit Great Walk hut or campsite booking are exempt from booking the Tongariro Alpine Crossing.
