Storms in early February 2022 severely damaged a section of the Heaphy Track Great Walk forcing the closure of the track between the James Mackay and Heaphy Huts.

DOC is working to fix the damage to the track as quickly as possible so the Heaphy Track can fully reopen.

The most significant damage was to bridges. The Heaphy Bridge was destroyed, the Gunner Bridge severely damaged and the Pitt Creek Bridge near Heaphy Hut washed out to sea.

The storms also caused significant damage to several sections of track.

Repairs are underway and updates on progress can be found in our regular newsletters.

The section of the Heaphy Track between Lewis Shelter and Heaphy Hut is closed. However, it is possible to book a helicopter transfer over the closed section of the track to enable walkers and bikers to complete the track from end-to-end. There are also great options for walking or biking it as a return trip from either end. All Heaphy Track huts are open and bookable.

Book the Heaphy Track.

The 2022 mountain bike season opened on 1 May and runs until 30 November. All the open sections of the track can be biked during that period.
