Heaphy Track recovery work
Introduction
In February 2022 severe storms damaged bridges and sections of track on the Heaphy Track Great Walk.As a result of the storms, a section of the track between the Lewis Shelter and Heaphy Hut is still closed.
All the Heaphy Track huts are open and bookable, however, which means there are great options for return trips from either the Golden Bay or Karamea end. Book the Heaphy Track.
It’s also possible to book a helicopter transfer over the closed section of the track so walkers can complete the track from end-to-end.
DOC is working to fix the damage to the bridges as quickly as possible so the Heaphy Track can fully reopen.
Updates on the progress of repairs can be found in our regular newsletters.
