The popular track on the edge of Kaimai Mamaku Conservation Park has been partially closed since mid-2025 due to rockfall activity and instability. From 7 September, the carpark and toilets will also be closed to allow for substantial works to occur safely.

Department of Conservation Project Manager Gerald Mullen says as well as addressing critical safety issues, the programme will replace aging infrastructure and improve the overall experience.

“We’ll be replacing platforms, a bridge, and generally improving the quality of infrastructure at the site.

“It’s an extremely popular spot and we’re highly motivated to get this done, and get it done well, in time for summer.”

The track takes visitors through lush native forest and past small waterfalls to eventually reach views of the dramatic 153 m Wairere Falls. The rugged geology which forms the spectacular falls is also prone to rockfall and instability which has necessitated the works.

Gerald says the team are looking forward to being able to reopen.

“We appreciate the support of the local community, and the patience they’ve shown. We’re not far off now, we’re hoping to have the track open, in full, by the end of November.”

The carpark, toilets, and track will be closed for public safety while helicopters and machinery are operating on site. Check the DOC website for updates on track closures.

The nearest alternative public toilets are at Waharoa, Firth Tower Historic Reserve, and Hetana Street Reserve.
