Date: 13 May 2025
Bookings open today for popular shared huts like the Coromandel’s Pinnacles Hut, Bushline in Nelson Lakes and Aspiring Hut. Fully bookable options include Te Whare Mata Uraura on Matiu/Somes Island, and The Camphouse in Taranaki and Mimiwhangata Beach House in Northland.
Later this week on Thursday 15 May, bookings will open for the Kepler, Heaphy and Rakiura Great Walks.
“Many people don’t know that as well as shared huts and campsites, DOC offers facilities like lodges and cabins people can fully book just like a bach,” says Cameron Hyland, DOC Visitor Services Manager.
“Our fully bookable cabins, lodges and cottages are an accessible and affordable way to get out into nature – particularly for families or larger groups. They can be found in many spectacular holiday locations including Hauraki Gulf islands, Marlborough Sounds and the West Coast.”
Whether you are booking a hut, campsite or Great Walk, it’s worth getting prepared early, says Cameron.
“Give yourself the best chance of securing your spot by creating an account on the booking system and making sure your login details work.
“Familiarise yourself with the booking system. You can even practice making a booking – just empty your cart at the end rather than paying.
“Bookings open at 9:30 am each opening day. We recommend logging on around 9:15 am, there’s no benefit to doing it any earlier,” says Cameron
