An image capturing the excitement of a mother and son, each holding a rainbow trout following a double hook-up at The Delta, a popular fishing spot on Lake Taupō, is the overall winner of this year’s DOC Taupō fishery photo competition.

Date:  11 June 2021

The winning image by Hamish Timmins will now feature on the printed plastic licences for the Taupō fishery.

Six additional winners will see their photos used to illustrate a range of licence options which feature in the ‘online fishing licence store’ or on 24-hour paper licences.

Competition judges had a tough job working through approximately 150 entries. Taupō Fishery Community Ranger James Barnett has a background in design and communications and said he was impressed by the quality of the images.

“We would like to thank everyone who submitted photos, we had a wide variety of styles and themes to consider, from informal family snaps to abstract moody landscapes.

“A feature of this year’s competition was the number of photos of families and children. An increase in the number of families enjoying trout fishing is a positive development and one that will increase participation and benefit the Taupo fishery overall,” James added.

The prizes were Family Season licences, which sets the winners up nicely for the new Taupo fishing season which begins 1 July 2021. The public can buy their new season licences from 24 June using the online licence store.

A variety of licence categories are available to suit the diverse needs of anglers. More information about Taupō fishing licenses
