About this hunting block

Fallow deer, pigs and goats are present in this reserve.

General information

The Rimunui Conservation Area is podocarp/tawa forest with some beech ridges. The terrain is moderate to steep, most of the leading ridges and spurs are negotiable. Kiwi are known to be present.

Access

From State Highway 3 near Waverley, turn north onto Kohi Road, then right onto Okahutiria Road. Continue along this road which becomes Mataimoana Road. On reaching the end of Mataimoana Road take the left branch onto Ahoroa Road, then Ngarahu Road and finally Moeawatea Road. These roads are clay roads and are suitable for 4WD vehicles only. Moeawatea Road is closed during the winter months.

The south eastern side of the hunting block can be accessed off Moeawatea Road. Access to the block is across the Whenuakura River. The only bridges are to the north and south of the block and both are private. The river can be crossed in several places during normal flow.

The gate at the start of Ohoroa Road is administered by South Taranaki District Council.

Dogs

A separate permit is required to hunt with dogs. All dogs must be avian avoidance certified. Contact the local DOC office for details.

Huts

There are no DOC huts in this reserve.

Additional information

There are no tracks and the area has very low visitor usage.
