Southland - backcountry track maintenance
9 -13 November 2026: This is a great chance to explore some of Southland’s back country tracks.

Description

Volunteers are needed to assist with track maintenance around Southland. Area's that may be visited include the Longwood Range, Takitimu Mountains and Eyre Mountains. The exact location of the trip will be determined by our work programme closer to the commencement of the trip.

Tasks will include clearing windfalls, clearing vegetation using scrub bars and hedge trimmers and remarking the tracks using orange poles and triangles. 

What to expect

Fitness/skill level

High fitness level. Backcountry tramping experience is recommended as the terrain can be uneven, muddy and steep in places. Volunteers must be able to carry personal gear and work equipment for long periods of time.

Accommodation

Backcountry huts or tents.

Pickup/drop-off location and times

Meet at the DOC workshop (at the rear of Marshall Industries), 193 Bond Street, Invercargill at 8:30 am on Monday 9 November. Volunteers will be returned to the same location at around 4:30 pm on Friday 13 November. 

Contribution towards food and transport

$200 per person.
