Piopiotahi ecological restoration project
July 2026 - June 2027: This is a great way to explore Milford Sound/Piopiotahi while checking trap lines and contributing to a worth while predator control project.

Project number: 20
Location: Milford Sound/Piopiotahi, Fiordland National Park

Dates

1 - 4 volunteers per day

July 2026 to July 2027 (traps are checked on a regular basis throughout the year)

Description

This is a fantastic opportunity to explore Milford Sound/Piopiotahi, enjoy the unique flora and fauna while helping with important predator control. Trap lines can take 4 to 5 hours to check. Tasks will include cleaning and rebaiting DOC 200 traps, maintaining and calibrating stoat traps, checking tracking tunnels, inputting data on TrapNZ and replacing SD cards on trail cameras.

What to expect

Fitness/skill level

Medium to high fitness level. Backcountry tramping experience following marked tracks and GPS skills are required. Mud can be knee deep in some areas and the cut tracks can be steep. There are multiple trap lines which require different fitness levels and we can discuss and assign a suitable trap line depending on someones capabilities. Previous use of DOC 200 traps and TrapNZ would be useful but is not essential as training can be provided.

Accommodation

These are day trips and accommodation is not provided. However, a powered site may be available for someone with their own campervan.

Pickup/drop-off location and times

Meet at the Milford Sound Lodge, State Highway 94, Fiordland National Park. Dates and times will be confirmed with the sucessful applicants.

Contribution towards food and transport

There is no charge for this activity. However, volunteers will need their own transport to Milford Sound.
