Request for Proposal opportunity for Tiritiri Matangi Island Wharf
The Minister of Conservation invites Requests for Proposals to provide scheduled commercial ferry services to the Tiritiri Matangi Island Wharf. Applications close 30 October 2026.

Background

Tiritiri Matangi Scientific Reserve is a 219-hectare island in the Hauraki Gulf near the Whangaparaoa peninsula. It is a pest-free island which has been restored through community volunteers. Many rare or threatened species have been re-introduced to the island. Tiritiri Matangi is also home to a historic lighthouse complex, managed by Maritime New Zealand. It is a popular place for people to visit, most commonly by ferry.

Landings to use the wharf at Tiritiri Matangi Scientific Reserve for a scheduled commercial ferry service is limited to one operator through the Auckland Conservation Management Strategy 2014. This is authorised through a licence, granted under Maritime Transport Act 1994 and Reserves Act 1977.

The existing licence is due to expire on 31 March 2027. DOC is seeking proposals to choose an operator for the next five years.
