Seven applications for accommodation at Pourerere Conservation Area
Have your say on seven lease concession applications for private baches within the Pourerere Conservation Area, Hawke’s Bay. Submissions closed on 25 November 2025.

These applications are notified under section 17SC of the Conservation Act 1987. The Minister of Conservation has received the following applications:

Concession applied for: Accomodation lease concession
Location of proposed activity: Pourerere Conservation Area, Hawke’s Bay
Summary of proposal: This notification covers seven individual applications for the private use of accommodation structures located within the Pourerere Conservation Area.

The applicants have applied for a term of 60 years, under exceptional circumstances (Section 17Z(1) of the Conservation Act 1987).

The lease areas, originally managed under the Land Act 1948, were transferred to Department of Conservation in 1987 and became the Pourerere Conservation Area. The Conservation Amendment Act 1996 requires that any new or renewed leases on DOC land should be issued as concessions under the Conservation Act.

How to make a submission

Any person or organisation may make a submission in writing to the Director-General on the proposal.

1. Prepare your submission

Record what you think in the submission form. Be sure to specify which of the seven applications your submission relates to – or indicate if your comments apply to all of them.

Any person or organisation wishing to be heard at a possible hearing in support of their submission must request an opportunity to appear before the Director-General. This request must be included in your submission.

Note that a hearing typically includes oral presentations of submissions, followed by questions or discussion led by the Director-General or their representatives.

What happens next

After submissions close:

  • DOC will analyse and consider all submissions and comments on the application.
  • A hearing will be held if there have been requests to be heard by the Director-General. If you have expressed an interest in presenting your submission at a hearing, you will be contacted by DOC regarding this.
  • DOC will analyse and consider information raised at the hearing if a hearing occurred.
  • DOC will make a recommendation to the Minister of Conservation.
  • The Minister of Conservation will make a decision on the application.

If a hearing is required, they are likely to occur during the week starting 8 December 2025.

DOC comment regarding publicly notified applications

The Minister of Conservation has made no determination regarding the suitability of this proposed concession on public conservation land. This public notification should not be interpreted as an intention on the part of the Minister of Conservation to grant the proposed concession.
