Making changes to your concession
During the life of your concession, you can request to make changes to your existing concession. This is called a variation.
- To apply for a variation, for example to add a new location, use the same application form you used to apply for the original concession. We will assess your variation request in the same way as your original application. The fee and processing time will depend on the complexity of the variation request.
Permit application forms - To make administrative adjustments to your existing concession, like updating contact details or changing a business name, email transactioncentre@doc.govt.nz.
Expiry of your concession
You can’t extend the term of a concession unless it is allowed by law. For example, you can’t extend a concession past 10 years from the original start date.
You must stop your activity at the end of the day your concession expires. If you continue operating after that date, you are breaking the law.
If you want to continue your activity you must apply for a new concession, we recommend that you apply at least 3 months before your current concession expires.
How long it takes to process an application
Selling or closing your business
You can't sell your permission, but if you sell your business you can apply to DOC to transfer it to the new owner. This is known as an assignment.
To discuss assignment of a concession, contact transactioncentre@doc.govt.nz.
If you close your business or no longer require your concession, you can surrender it. You must apply to surrender your concession using the application form below.
The surrender will take effect from the date your application is received. All concession fees up to the date of the surrender must be paid.

Concession contract reviews
Your concession contract will be reviewed every 3 years and amendments may need to be made to ensure the environmental effects of your activity are well managed.
Rent/activity/management fee reviews
Your rental, activity and management fees will be reviewed at least every 3 years.
Fees
We charge an application processing fee based on the time required to process your application and staff hourly charge-out rates. There are set minimum fees to process applications to change your current permission. Complex applications cost more as they take longer to process.
Learn more about processing categories and minimum fees
We will confirm your minimum processing fee once your application is accepted and we have assessed its complexity. If we expect your processing fee to exceed the minimum fee, we will give you a non-binding fee estimate before we start work.
We will usually invoice your fee after processing is complete. If you withdraw your application, you will be charged for any work already done.
