PLANT A PONGA
Or a kōwhai, or a makomako, or any of the other 2,000 plant species only found here.
From kauri to kawakawa, most of New Zealand’s native plants are unique to this whenua.

WHAT YOU
CAN DO
-
If you want to help but don’t have a backyard, you can donate a tree through Trees That Count. Your tree will be planted and cared for by one of thousands of groups working to restore native ecosystems around New Zealand.
-
Join a community planting session, have a fun day out and enjoy watching your living legacy grow. To get started, try searching for a group that’s active in your area.
-
If you have a garden, there’s a native plant to suit your space – no matter how small, shady or windy. For tips, see DOC’s advice on planning and planting a native garden.
HOW YOU'LL
MAKE A DIFFERENCE
Plant one tree and you’ll provide food and shelter for birds, insects and lizards. Plant more and you’ll create your part of a ‘green corridor’.
Green corridors are the joined-up ecosystems native animals need to move around. They enable flowers to be pollinated and seeds to be dispersed. More green corridors = more trees.
Just 10 to 15% of New Zealand is still covered in native plants.
ARE YOU IN?
It takes everyone to make a difference for nature. Every little bit helps.
NATURE'S IN
TROUBLE
Thousands of our native species are heading towards extinction, but it’s not too late to save them.
All around New Zealand, Kiwis are bringing nature back.
