WHAT YOU
CAN DO
-
Call 0800 DOC HOT (0800 362 468) immediately if you see anyone catching, harming or killing native wildlife.
-
For other situations where a native animal may be in need of help, follow DOC’s advice for how to report sick, injured or dead wildlife. Help is available 24/7 in an emergency, including for whale strandings.
-
Report biosecurity hazards to the Ministry for Primary Industries’ pest and disease hotline. These include invasive weeds such as royal fern and introduced pests like wallabies.
-
New Zealand is on the lookout for avian flu, a highly contagious virus putting native birds at risk. If you see three or more sick or dead birds in a group, immediately call the pest and disease hotline. Do not touch or move the birds.
-
Spotted a whale or dolphin? Use DOC’s online form to report a marine mammal sighting. For Māui or Hector’s dolphin sightings, call 0800 DOC HOT (0800 362 468) immediately.
HOW YOU'LL
MAKE A DIFFERENCE
You can help DOC and other organisations respond to whale strandings, stamp out invasive species, catch illegal poachers and respond to emergencies.
ARE YOU IN?
It takes everyone to make a difference for nature. Every little bit helps.
READY TO DO MORE?
If you’re regularly in an area where a threatened species lives, report your sightings. Check out DOC’s information for sightings of kea, takahē, Māui and Hector’s dolphins and alpine lizards, or contact your local DOC office.
