Local accommodation provider Radfords on the Lake is helping to promote awareness of the Antipodes Island parakeet/kākāriki.

Radfords on the Lake

Radfords on the Lake provides 5-star accommodation in Te Anau. Owners Kerri and Steve James, Southland locals ‘born and bred’, feel privileged to host guests in this special environment. Their passion for Fiordland is reflected in many aspects of their business, and they are proud to be involved in several local conservation projects.

The partnership

Being within walking distance of their motel, and a place that many of their guests enjoy, Kerri and Steve were keen to support the Punanga Manu o Te Anau/Te Anau Bird Sanctuary.

They were particularly interested in a colourful resident – the Antipodes Island parakeet/kākāriki. Found in the wild only on the windswept subantarctic Antipodes Islands, these parakeets are intelligent and hardy.

Not only does Radfords on the Lake contribute to the ongoing costs of keeping the parakeets happy and healthy, but thanks to their generous support, a new interpretation panel about these little-known birds will be installed.
