Getting there

From Stratford, head north along State Highway 3 for 6km, turning left into York Road. The track starts at the end of the York Road.

Egmont National Park

Egmont National Park can be found on the western coast of New Zealand's North Island. Here the volcano Taranaki (or Mt Egmont as it is also known) rules supreme.

York Road Loop track is within Egmont National Park and follows part of the old Egmont Branch Railway Line which was constructed to provide metal for roads and rocks for Port Taranaki. The quarry operated until the late 1920s

Description

This well defined track will take you past old quarry sites and remains. Ten numbered posts are placed along the track at sites of interest.

Plan and prepare

What to expect on a walking track:

  • Easy to moderate walking from a few minutes to a day
  • Track is mostly well formed, some sections may be steep, rough or muddy
  • Suitable for people with low to moderate fitness and abilities
  • Clearly sign posted. Stream and river crossings are bridged
  • Walking shoes or light tramping/hiking boots required
