Control Gates to Dock Bay, Brod Bay & Mt Luxmore
Great Walk/Easy tramping track
Getting there
These walking options commence from the control gates on Lake Te Anau just to the south of Te Anau township.
Description
Times:
- Dock Bay, 30 min
- Brod Bay, 1 hr 30 min
- Mt Luxmore, 8 -10 hr return
Heading north from the Lake Te Anau control gates the track to Dock Bay and onwards follows the lake edge through mountain and red beech forest. In spring the yellow-flowering kowhai and scented orchids are attractive. Dock Bay is suitable for swimming and has toilet and barbecue facilities.
The track continues around the lake for another hour to the long, sweeping Brod Bay. From here the track to Mt Luxmore ascends through mountain and silver beech forest, passes under towering limestone bluffs, and climbs above the bushline to Luxmore Hut. This strenuous, full-day walk provides impressive views of Lakes Te Anau and Manapouri, and the Te Anau basin.
