Booking campsites and huts

Trampers intending to stay at the Rakiura Track facilities are required to book these prior to departure. Note: You need to print off the confirmation letter of your booking and take it with you.

Great Walk hut or campsite bookings may be completed online or purchased from the Rakiura National Park Visitor Centre in Halfmoon Bay, Stewart Island. School groups should contact the Rakiura National Park Visitor Centre before making bookings.

There is a limit of two consecutive nights in any hut. 


Huts are supplied with mattresses, a wood burning stove for heating, running water and toilets. Cookers and cooking utensils are not supplied – it is essential to carry your own portable stove, fuel and utensils. 

Enjoy a night at one of the designated campsites

Hunters may also be staying at these huts.


Camping is permitted only at the designated campsites at Maori Beach, Port William and North Arm. Please note that these camp sites are not adjacent to the huts.

When camping, you may not use hut facilities, but a cooking shelter, water supply and toilet have been provided at each site.

Please leave all huts and campsites clean and tidy and carry out all rubbish.

Sea kayaking and water taxi

Once on the island, sea kayaks and water taxis are available for hire and can be used for access to Rakiura Track huts and campsites. Stewart Island waters are changeable and should be treated with the utmost respect.
