Twilight South

South end of Twilight Beach to Scott Point

Time: 1 hr 30 min

Exit the south end of Twilight Beach on the 4WD track next to the orange marker. The track ascends above the beach and you will walk through scrub again, with views across Te Paki Farm.

You will need to watch carefully for a quad motorbike track, which veers right off the main 4WD track. The marker may be very difficult to see, but here you should turn right and follow the quad track. (Note: If you come to a (locked) farm gate and a paddock, you will need to double back about 10 minutes, as you have gone the wrong way).

You will eventually come to a board stairway that leads you up over the dunes and down onto 90 Mile Beach.

Scott Point to Te Paki Stream parking area

Time: 2 hr

Follow 90 Mile Beach south for approximately an hour until you come to Te Paki Stream. This is also a popular vehicle entrance/exit to the beach so be prepared for cars and tourist buses.

Turn left and follow the stream inland through the dunes for another hour until you come to the Te Paki Stream parking area and toilets. The track ends here.

The Twilight Beach to Te Paki Stream track forms part of the Cape Reinga Coastal Walkway. Rather than following Te Paki Stream inland, you can continue along 90 Mile Beach past Te Paki Stream and follow the coast further south. Distances are - The Bluff 19 km; Hukatere 51 km; Waipapakauri 69 km and Ahipara 83 km.

Getting there

Cape Reinga and Te Paki are located at the northernmost area of New Zealand on the small, narrow Aupouri Peninsula, approximately 60 km north of Kaitaia. Just follow State Highway 1 north. From Te Paki onwards, follow Cape Reinga Road.

Cape Reinga Road is an unsealed road and gets very busy over the summer months. Please drive slowly and take extra caution.

You have vehicle access to Te Paki Stream - turn off Cape Reinga Road at Te Paki onto Te Paki Stream Road.

Plan and prepare

You will want to have pre-arranged your pick-up from the Te Paki Stream Parking Area.
