The Pukekohe Stream Track links the Omahuta Sanctuary Road and the 'Hokianga Tree' on the Omahuta Sanctuary Track. You can glimpse remnants of a kauri dam in the Pukekohe streambed.

Much of the kauri in the Pukekohe stream area has been logged although vigorous new growth is now occurring.

10,000 Steps Northland

This track equates to approximately 4,400 steps.

Getting there

Puketi and Omahuta Forests are easily accessible from the Hokianga Harbour and the Bay of Islands. You can access the Pukekohe Stream Track from State Highway One. It is signposted a few kilometres south of Mangamuka Bridge. Please drive carefully on Omahuta Sanctuary Road - it is very narrow in places. Keep to the main road as side roads often deteriorate quickly.

Plan and prepare

  • Carry warm, waterproof clothing, and food and drink, even on short walks.
  • Stout shoes or walking boots are advisable.
  • You may wish to boil water from the streams before drinking.
  • No dogs or fires due to risks to wildlife.
