Description

From the parking spot, follow the markers across the paddocks and down a steep farm track to descend into the Pohangina River. Walk along the river flats upstream a short distance before reaching the Ruahine Forest Park boundary. The turn off to Centre Creek Track which leads to Takapari Road is reached after approximately one hours walk. A well marked sidle track starts past here passing high above the river and dropping in and out of several sidestreams. A swingbridge crossing the Pohangina River has been removed; follow a marked detour off the main track to the river crossing.

Getting there

From Ashhurst head north up the Pohangina Valley and turn onto the Pohangina Valley East Road. Continue up the valley for some distance until reaching a sign by a farm gate on the side of the road which indicates the start of the track. This crosses private land; prior arrangements to use this access must be made with the landowner. Contact details for the landowner are available from the Manawatū Rangitīkei Area Office.

Plan and prepare

Before you go into the outdoors, tell someone your plans and leave a date to raise the alarm if you haven't returned. To do this, use the New Zealand Outdoors Intentions process on the AdventureSmart website. It is endorsed by New Zealand's search and rescue agencies and provides three simple options to tell someone you trust the details about your trip.
