Dromedary Hill track.
Dromedary Hill Track

Dromedary Hill Track

Grade 5: Expert
Time: 2.5-4 hr
Distance: 10 km

Dromedary Hill (1664 m), in Lindis Conservation Area, makes a great half-day mountain bike ride from the SH 8 car park near Dalrachney bridge. The views on the ascent are spectacular, with Mt Barth in Ahuriri Conservation Park clearly visible.

Pavilion Peak Track

Grade 5: Expert
Distance: 32 km

This track is a continuation of the Dromedary Hill ascent above. The track undulates along the mountain tops within Lindis Conservation Area and then descends to a saddle under Pavilion Peak. It is a steep climb up Pavilion Peak and riders need to be careful on the descent down to Avon Burn. From the river flats it is a pleasant ride out to Birchwood Road car park in the Ahuriri Valley.

Melina Ridge Track

Grade 5: Expert
Distance: 35 km

Park on the Otago side of Lindis Pass on SH 8. The ride is more gruelling from this end with a steep ascent of Mt Melina (as opposed to starting in the Ahuriri valley). The descent of Mt Melina leads down into the Avon Burn past a private musterers hut.

Getting there

The Lindis Pass area is New Zealand's best known tussock landscape. It is 4.5 hours drive south of Christchurch or 2 hours north of Queenstown.
