About this hunting block
Location
Otutu Hut is located on the mid-western boundary of the Kaweka Forest Park in the area known as the “Manson Country”. The Manson area was originally grazed by sheep in the 1860’s and the surrounding country-side subjected to large fires that devastated the native vegetation.
Access
Hunters visiting the Otutu area can enjoy open top or bush/creek clearing hunting. Access is available to some of the park’s north eastern spurs that adjoin the Spion Kop main ridge or the scrub covered areas south of the hut that are divided by small creek systems.
Early morning or late evening hunts are the best time to find deer feeding out in the open just south of the hut or across on the Manson Tops. The hut location also provides access to the adjoining beech forest, and day hunts down into the creek system just east of the hut can be rewarding. Hunters should take note that the park boundary is only 750m to the west of the hut – beyond is private land with no right of entry for the public.
Making the best use of main tracks when planning a hunting adventure will help ensure a safe and easy return.
Dogs
Only registered, avian aversion certified hunting dogs, guide dogs, companion dogs (certified by the Top Dog Companion Trust) and dogs used for special services (including conservation management activities) are permitted in the park. All other dogs are banned.
General conditions
- Permits for rimfire and smooth bore calibres will only be issued under special circumstances.
- Special conditions apply to hunting with bows and crossbows. Check with the Department of Conservation when you apply for a permit.
