This hunting area is covered by an 'open area permit' – get it online or from a DOC office.

About this hunting block

Pigs are present in the Coromandel block. Goats are also present in very low numbers.

General information

The Coromandel block encompasses the Whangapoua Forest 4,022 ha of mainly kauri, podocarp and broadleaved forest types. The terrain is undulating with sharp ridges and steep guts. The northern boundary takes in the Whangapoua Road, with the southern boundary being the 309 Road. The eastern and western boundaries comprise exotic forestry blocks and private land.

Access

The Whangapoua Forest is accessed via the Castle Rock Road, entry points off the 309 Road and also the Whangapoua Road.

Landholders

All hunters are asked to respect the rights of private land owners and farmers and gain permission from the land owner/occupier should they intend to gain access to the block across private land.

Dogs

  • The number of hunting dogs is limited to three per permittee.
  • It is a requirement that all dogs in this block have current certification for kiwi/bird aversion training.
  • Dogs must be kept under control at all times.
  • Dogs are not permitted in DOC campgrounds.

Huts

There are no DOC huts in this block.

Additional information

The part of the Whangapoua Forest that lies between the 309 Road to the south and encompassed by State Highway 25 via Coromandel, Kūaotunu and Whitianga is excluded for recreational hunting between the 1 May and 1 October.

Beware of vertical mine shafts in this area.
