General information
This hunting area is located 70 km west of Christchurch between Porter's Pass, Broken River and the Waimakariri River.
The terrain is moderate to very steep with rock and scree on the tops. The vegetation is beech forest, scrub, tussock and alpine shrubland.
Pigs, red deer and chamois are present in low to moderate numbers.
Other hunters and trampers may be encountered. Take precautions and identify your target.
Access
Access may be obtained from SH 73 at Porters Pass and off the end of the Craigieburn Road, via Slovens Creek to the Avoca Homestead area.

Landholders
Landholder permission is required for any other access through Mt Torlesse, Brooksdale, Cora Lynn, Castle Hill or Flock Hill stations.

Know before you go
Dogs
Dogs are permitted in the Broken River hunting area. Dogs must be kept under control and not used for hunting until well within the DOC hunting area.
Wasps
Wasp populations reach high numbers from January to March – wear light-coloured clothing and carry antihistamine cream/tablets as a precaution.
