This hunting area is covered by an 'open area permit' – get it online or from a DOC office.

About this hunting block

General information

This region is part of the Oteake Conservation Park and is generally gentle, rolling tussock country. Red deer and pigs are found here.

Access

To access the Oteake hunting block from the eastern side of Hawkdun Range, turn off SH 83 on to Backyards road for 2 kms to Otamatapaio Conservation Area. There is 4wd access from here for 4 km to the gorge. From a second vehicle park here a marked public walking easement takes you to Otamatapaio Hut or an easement which branches off via Dog Gully.

To access the block from the western side of Hawkdun Range, there is a public foot and vehicle easement at Shepherds Hut Creek. Runholder permission is required before taking firearms on the easement.

The northern end of the block can be accessed from end of Broken hut rd on the Berwen easement.
