Introduction

Deer and pig hunting is popular here. Both red deer and fallow deer are present. This lowland forest is dominated by tawa and rewarewa.

General information

Otawa Forest is located in the Papamoa Hills south of Te Puke. It contains lowland forest dominated by tawa and rewarewa.

Access

Access is from the end of Manoeka Road in the east, the Otawa Trig Track from Te Puke Quarry Road in the north, or from Demeter Road in the south.

The Te Puke Quarry Road access crosses private farmed land via a formed track. A small car park marks the entrance. Please leave the farm gates as you find them, and keep to the track.

Access through the quarry is legally permitted to foot traffic only and is subject to the following conditions:

  • No hunting is permitted within the quarry area.
  • Firearms must be unloaded at all times within the quarry area.

Otawa is included in DOC's Kaimai Mamaku Conservation Park map available from iSITES and Visitor Centres.

Additional information

Take care not to stray on to private land. Boundaries may not be fenced.

The quarry area in the south of the reserve carries risks due to potential quarry operations. Access through the quarry is legally permitted to foot traffic only and is subject to the following conditions:

  • No hunting is permitted within the quarry area
  • Firearms must be unloaded at all times within the quarry area
