Fallow deer are found in reasonable numbers in the forest, which is also a kiwi zone subject to a large scale community conservation project.

General information

Otanewainuku is located south of Oropi. It features virgin unlogged forest and is home to a variety of native birds and animals including kiwi. Bird species such as robin and bell bird are readily seen and heard as a result of a large scale community conservation project in the forest.

Access

Access is via Mountain Road and No. 2 Road south of Oropi.

Otanewainuku is included in DOC's Kaimai Mamaku Conservation Park map available from i-SITES and visitor centres.

Additional information

The Otanewainuku Kiwi Trust has a large scale animal pest control operation in the forest targeting possum, rats and stoats. The operation is centred on the car park at Mountain Road. Regular checking of trap and bait stations is conducted by volunteers and the Trust holds regular working bees in the forest, and occasional night time kiwi-listening events.
