Recreation facilities in the backcountry

For your safety, every effort has been made to ensure this information is correct. However, you should contact the local DOC visitor centre for the latest updates. Changes to weather will affect conditions in the backcountry. Always check the latest weather report metservice.co.nz before you venture out and be prepared to change your plans if conditions are unfavourable.

Your safety is your responsibility. Make sure you plan, prepare and equip yourself for any trip into the backcountry. Follow the Outdoor safety code

To report any safety hazards or conservation emergencies call DOC HOTline - 0800 362 468. For fire and search and rescue call 111.

Te Angiangi Marine Reserve - closed

  • Issued: 22 December 2011
  • Valid until further notice

The reserve was severely impacted by flooding and subsequent slippage in March 2011. Unstable slips still cover much of the reserve, making access difficult and dangerous.

  • Access along the beach remains impassable
  • The toilet and interpretation block in the middle of the reserve have disappeared completely, as have land based marine reserve markers.

Fire restrictions in Hawke's Bay region

Fires are restricted to DOC-provided fireplaces only. Extreme fire conditions can exist during summer. If a prohibited fire season is put in place all fires will be banned.

Everetts campsite - Mohaka Conservation Area

The campsite is open, however caution is required when driving on the access road. The access road is only suitable for 4WD vehicles. It is not suitable for caravans and motor homes.

Ruahine Forest Park

  • Rimu Track: The Rimu Track is closed from Takapari Road.

Kaweka Forest Park

  • Makahu Road: Caution is required at the Makahu Road ford which is 8 km before the roadend, and before you get to the Kaweka Forest Park boundary. The Hastings District Council has placed a marker pole in the stream to indicate the safe crossing level.
  • Charlie Brown Road: Charlie Brown Road, behind Robson's Lodge, is closed to walkers and vehicles until July 2012 due to logging operations.
  • Kuripapango Road: Kuripapango Road is closed to the public due to logging operations. Access to the southern sector of Kaweka Forest Park is now via Castle Rock Road.

Lake Tutira - algal bloom

At times Lake Tutira can be subject to algal bloom. The Hawke's Bay Public Health Unit hotline +64 6 878 1368 provides updates on the water quality of Hawke's Bay lakes, rivers and streams.

Dogs

Kiwi deaths caused by dogs have resulted in dog restrictions. The only dogs permitted to be taken into the Kaweka and Ruahine Forest Parks and the Tarawera/Stoney Creek Conservation Areas will be certified hunting dogs, being actively used for hunting purposes at that time and whose owners have a Permit to hunt with dogs. All other dogs are banned. The permit will only be issued to hunters whose dogs have undergone an approved avian aversion training course and who hold a current Bird Safe Certificate.
