Bird and wildlife watching
Ulva Island, in the centre of Paterson Inlet, is a regular stop on boat trips. It is renowned for its diversity and abundance of birdlife; weka, kākā, kākāriki, tūī, bellbirds, pigeons, kereru, fantails, kiwi, saddleback, Stewart Island robin and mohua (yellowhead).
While Ulva Island can be visited during daylight hours, at any time of the year, probably the best time to see native birds is early in the morning during springtime.
The forest is dominated by rimu, southern rātā and kamahi, with a diverse understorey of broadleaf and fern.
Historic sites
Near the wharf the island's century-old post office still stands. The buildings and surrounds are on privately owned land.
