Introduction

Located in the Te Paki Recreation Reserve in the Northland region these giant sand dunes are a popular tourist attraction. Be aware that people have been seriously injured sandboarding down them.

Te Paki Stream – Drive with caution

It is recommended if you are accessing Te Paki Stream that you use a 4WD.

Check the access point from the end of Te Paki Stream Road into the stream before driving over as scouring from water can cause steep drop offs.

The stream can also change course or depth after rain, remember other vehicles could be travelling the stream including buses.

Te Paki sand dunes are a series of giant dunes. They are around 150 m high and are a spectacular sight.

This is a popular stop for people visiting Cape Reinga/Te Rerenga Wairua and 90 Mile Beach. You can walk on the dunes – it is a lovely place to enjoy the scenery.

If you wish to sandboard on the dunes, read the information below – sandboarding here is risky and should be approached with caution.

Sandboarding Te Paki dunes is risky

The dunes are long and steep – sandboards go very fast. People have been seriously injured and one person has died while sandboarding here. Emergency services are far from Te Paki, so if there is an accident it takes a long time to get help.

Start slow and stay in control

If you do wish to sandboard, we recommend starting on a small slope or short distance first to test your abilities. Walk the area first to make sure there are no obstacles or bumps.

Stay in control and keep your speed down. It’s easy to go fast quickly, which can cause you to lose control, tumble and seriously hurt yourself or someone else.

Avoid cars and other people

Make sure your route is clear of other people before you start sliding. We strongly advise that you do not sandboard on any dunes that lead into the stream where vehicles drive – it puts you at risk of being hit by a car or bus.

Care for the dunes by parking in the car park

The dune environment is fragile and needs protecting. Please do not drive on the dunes – use the car park provided.
