About this hunting block
Location
Rocks Ahead Bivouac is located on the true right bank of the Ngaruroro River at the mid-western boundary of the area known as the “Manson Country”. This bivouac is directly across the river from the Rocks Ahead Hut. The bivouac is sited near the junction of three major tracks from the west (Manson), the north (Venison Tops) and the east (Back Ridge).
Access
The Rocks Ahead area provides access to a good number of bush/creek hunting opportunities. Hunting can be undertaken close to the bivouac or by climbing to higher locations away from the immediate bivouac area for the more adventurous. Access into the gully heads to the west and east of the hut is possible although travel in the Rocks Ahead stream bed becomes difficult after 10 minutes from the bivouac.
Access to open tops hunting on the Spion Kop main ridge and the east facing Manson gully heads is available. Early morning or late evening hunts are likely to bring hunters in contact with feeding deer out in the open in gullies off the main Manson Tops.
Making the best use of main tracks when planning a hunting adventure will help ensure a safe and easy return.
Dogs
Only registered, avian aversion certified hunting dogs, guide dogs, companion dogs (certified by the Top Dog Companion Trust) and dogs used for special services (including conservation management activities) are permitted in the park. All other dogs are banned.
