About this hunting block

Location

Rocks Ahead Hut is located on the true left bank of the Ngaruroro River, sited at the junction of three major tracks:

  • Manson to the west
  • Venison Tops to the north; and
  • Back Ridge to the east.

Its river bank location makes for a popular fishing, rafting and kayaking stop-over.

Access

The Rocks Ahead area provides access to a good number of bush/creek hunting opportunities close to the hut or for the more adventurous at higher locations.

Access into the gully heads to the north and east of the hut is possible, although travel in the Rocks Ahead stream bed is difficult. Access to open tops hunting is on the Spion Kop main ridge and the east facing Manson gully heads. Early morning or late evening hunts provide the best time to see deer feeding out in the open or in gully heads off Manson Tops.

Making the best use of main tracks when planning a hunting adventure will help ensure a safe and easy return.

Dogs

Only registered, avian aversion certified hunting dogs, guide dogs, companion dogs (certified by the Top Dog Companion Trust) and dogs used for special services (including conservation management activities) are permitted in the park. All other dogs are banned.
